While on our journey to reduce our carbon footprint, increase our sustainability and stay “eco-nomical” in today’s economy – I have found myself in several different categories of being green. Although I strive to be “Extraordinary Green”, I know I’m not perfect but every little bit can make a difference.

There are many people out there that will guilt you into going green in the “Go Green Slogans”, such as having there kids wear the “save the planet for me”,” recycle or die”, etc. We don’t like the “preachy” approach at all and are proud of what we do to be green and not dwell on what you should do because “this is where you’re not green”.

Every little step toward green living matters.

If your a hint of green then you’re alright with me. We’re in-between Gladly Green and Overwhelmed Green and always trying to get better at leaving a lighter carbon/environmental footprint and being great ancestors. Where do you fall on the spectrum of being “green”?

  • (The following is an awesome excerpt from The Eco-nomical Baby Guide: Down-to-Earth Ways for Parents to Save Money and the Planet by Joy Hatch and Rebecca Kelley page 17)

    A Spectrum of Green Parents:

    Extraordinary Green:
You grow your own produce, operate a solar-powered dryer (i.e. clothesline), and ride your bicycle whenever possible. You literally get goose bumps when you imagine how exciting it would be to start a composting farm with your little one.

    Gladly Green:
You enjoy the challenge of reducing waste and delight in every small step you take toward living a more sustainable life. You even schlep empty aluminum cans from the office holiday party to the recycling bin simply because it it soo painful to see them in the trash.

    Overwhelmed Green:
You really would like to make more green choices but feel inundated by the options and utterly unable to live up to your environmental ideals. Limiting your family’s impact on the planet is a goal you’d like to achieve – and even feel a bit guilty about it – but it may feel impossible in the midst of preparing for a baby.

    Jaded Green:
While you think it’s nice that some people really would like to save the world, it all seems very, well…difficult. You many be grumbling to yourself, “Whole rainforests are being leveled, what’s the point of me trying to stop global warming?” Your life is stressful and demanding – the thought of adding more responsibility or complexity to your schedule is too much to bear, especially with a baby on the way.

    Defiantly Ungreen:
You don’t believe in global warming and drive a Hummer limousine on your five-hundred-mile daily communte. Your children wear nothing but PVC jumpsuits.

If you’re Defiantly Ungreen, then I’m surprised you’re reading this sentence. All others, we would love to hear what green are you? Comment below and share your GREEN-NESS!
